The Master Bee Keeper

The Master Bee Keeper (My Dad) and I decided to get a look at his winged pets' progress so far this season and I can testify that the saying "busy as a bee" is as accurate as they come because they have definitely been busy.
MBK's (Master Bee Keeper) first set of "bees" were actually a swarm of Bald Face Hornets that spent the summer of 2008 building an impressive castle for their queen.
We couldn't have requested a better building location since we were given front row seats to all the action directly out the dining room window.
Last year MBK managed to re-home a couple sets of rouge swarms but this year the real bee keeping began with the construction of two new Top Bar hives and two sets of bees to fill them. (Important Note!! No protective gear was worn during this advanture, just thought you should know)
There is a near constant stream of arrivals and departures but the real action is unseen.
First we checked out the latest progress on the back bar of the hive. The new comb being built looks great and appears to be holding honey.
Then we decided to crack open the hive at about mid-point to see some of the complete comb.
The vast amount of bees and lack of protective clothing was slightly unnerving but our winged critters were just so focused on the job at hand they didn't even seem to realize we were handling them. To think that just over a month ago this was simply an empty box!
Of all the critters on the homestead these little winged critters are an instant favorite for all and I have a feeling we are just in the very beginning stages of what will become a life long passion.
Warm Summer Wishes,
The Burns Girls
